The capital of Evlei Autonomous Oblast in southeastern Russia. It is located about 170 km west-northwest of Khabarovsk, on the Bira River, a tributary of the Amur River, along the Trans-Siberian Railway. In 1928, the railway station Tikhonkaya was established, and Jews settled there. In 1931, the town was renamed Birobidzhan. In 1934, it became the administrative center of the Evlei (Jewish) Autonomous Oblast when it was established, and in 1937 it became a city. Initially, industries such as sewing, hosiery, shoemaking, and felt (for boots) developed, but in the 1960s an agricultural machinery factory and a transformer factory were built, and other factories for food (meat, beer, dairy products), lumber, furniture, etc. were also established.
