...The revolutionary government emphasized Arab nationalism and placed importance on adding Libya to the ranks of the national liberation movement in the Arab world. In 1973, the revolutionary leader Gaddafi put forward a unique liberation theory called the "Third Universal Theory" (also known as the "Green Book" al-Kitāb al-akhḍar). This liberation theory, also called "Islamic socialism," which is different from the conventional socialist liberation theory, placed great importance on the subjectivity of the masses (as is shown by the fact that the Arabic word jamāhiriyya, meaning "masses," was replaced by jumhuriya, which generally means "republic," and was superimposed on the official name of the country). Existing institutions were abolished, and a system was established in which the People's Committee and the All-People's Assembly, in which all citizens participate, would oversee the entire legislative and administrative processes. ...
