A sleeveless, waist-length decorative vest. Or a vest worn with a suit. In English, it is called a waistcoat or vest. It was introduced from England during the time of Louis XVI (reigned 1774-92) as a replacement for the long vest worn under the habit à la française, which was the official clothing of men throughout Europe. It reached the waist, and the front was made of beautifully colored and patterned fabric, while the back was usually made of a different, less expensive fabric. Although it was a simple garment, it was valued for adding variety and color to outfits and allowing for individualistic tastes, and it became popular among people from the nobility to the common people. Even after men's suits were established in the mid-19th century, the vest remained as an undershirt, but its role as an accent in clothing faded as the overall beauty of uniformity became more important, and the vest was made from the same fabric. From the 19th century, it was also adopted by women, and worn under suits instead of blouses or shirts.
