Nowy Sącz

The capital of the province of the same name in southern Poland. Population 82,300 (1995). Located 75 km southeast of Krakow. Located on the upper reaches of the Donaec River, a tributary of the Vistula River, it is a tourist and resort city in the Beskid Mountains of the Carpathian Mountains. There are many resorts and sanatoriums. An old town dating back to the 13th century, it is on the main road to Kosice in Slovakia, and slightly upstream along the road is Stary Sáncz (stary means old, nowy means new).
