...There are two methods for making colored films: tinting, which involves dyeing part or all of the positive with dye, and toning the positive image. The dyeing method was thought up in the early days of film, and was originally done by hand, frame by frame, but around 1896, the stencil process, which uses stencils, was invented in England and France, and was widely used around the world until around 1910, and in Japan, films were released as "extremely colored films." The toning method involves plating or replacing the particles of the silver image of the positive with other metals or compounds, and later, the dye toning method was discovered, which allows for a richer range of colors to be produced.
