A Gaelic language. It is spoken on the Isle of Man and is also called Manx. It is an offshoot of Irish, but the initial state of the language is unclear. The first Manx document was a translation of The Book of Common Prayer (around 1610), and most of the extant manuscripts written in the 18th and 19th centuries are related to religion. In this language, not only has initial nasalization been achieved, but the phonemic function of palatals has also been partially lost. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
