Decorative sword - Kazari-tachi

A type of sword used in the attire of nobles. It is also written as kazariken. It is called kazariken because it is the most beautifully decorated sword among the swords used by the ceremonial guards. The sword is worn at the waist of the sokutai (ceremonial robes) with a braided cord called hirao. The formal style is karatachi, and it is used for important ceremonies such as the Daijoe (the Daijo-e Ceremony), Gokei (the Emperor's purification ceremony), Gyokou (the Imperial Visit), and Sechie (the Celebration of the Feast ... The pommel is fitted with kabuto-gane (helmet metalwork), and the menuki has a flower-shaped seat. The tsuba (guard) is a copper-shaped karatsuba (guard), and the ichi-no-ashi (first leg), ni-no-ashi (second leg), seme (attack), and ishi-zuki (flange) are fitted with long gold-plated metal fittings, which are engraved with arabesque patterns and studded with jewels. It is not easy to prepare such an ornate sword, so for ordinary ceremonies, a substitute called a hosodachi (thin sword), which has simplified metal fittings and is made thinner, was used.

公家(くげ)の服装に用いられる太刀の一種。飾剣とも書かれる。儀仗(ぎじょう)の太刀のうち、もっとも美麗に装飾した太刀のため、この名でよばれる。束帯(そくたい)の腰の位置に、平緒(ひらお)と称する組紐(くみひも)で佩用(はいよう)する太刀は、唐太刀(からたち)を本式とし、大嘗会(だいじょうえ)、御禊(ごけい)（天皇の禊(みそぎ)）、行幸(ぎょうこう)、節会(せちえ)などの大儀に際して用いられる。柄(つか)に鮫皮(さめがわ)をかぶせ、鮫皮おさえの4個の鋲(びょう)は飾目貫(かざりめぬき)といい、近世になって俵鋲(たわらびょう)ともいわれた。柄頭(つかがしら)に冑金(かぶとがね)をはめ、目貫に花形の座を据える。鐔(つば)は分銅形の唐鐔(からつば)で、鞘(さや)には一の足、二の足、責(せめ)、石突(いしづき)に、それぞれ金鍍金(きんときん)の長金物をはめ、それに唐草を彫金し、玉をちりばめる。このような華麗な太刀は調製も容易ではなく、通常の儀式には其(そ)の代(だい)、つまり代用として、飾金物を簡略化して細くつくった細太刀(ほそだち)と称するものを用いた。
