Black regulation laws were enacted in the United States after the Civil War. They were enacted in the former Confederate states of the United States between 1865 and 1866 as a response to the chaos that followed the emancipation of slaves in the South, to determine the social status of freed slaves. The content of the regulations varied, but they bound blacks to work for their former masters through vagrancy laws and apprenticeship laws, restricted their freedom of movement and freedom to choose their occupation, denied them the right to vote, and imposed severe restrictions on testimony in court and on property ownership. Intermarriage with whites was also strictly prohibited. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
