An island in the central part of the Lesser Sunda Islands (Nusa Tenggara) in south-central Indonesia. It is mountainous, with several volcanoes over 2000m above sea level. The interior is savanna-like. It is also known as a hunting ground. The inhabitants are mostly Malay in the west and Papuan in the east. The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century, and the Dutch occupied it in the 17th century. However, little development took place until the 19th century. Specialties include sandalwood, tortoiseshell, copra, and bird's nest. The capital is Ende. A major earthquake in December 1992 killed 2500 people.
