Born: July 1, 1893 in Matsuyama
[Died] November 18, 1985. Tokyo educator and educational psychologist. After graduating from the University of Tokyo in 1916, he was involved in research into the intelligence structure and education of intellectually disabled children. Later, while studying abroad at the University of Leipzig, he was inspired by German educational science, and after becoming a professor at Hosei University (1924), he began to scientifically study education. He also organized the Childcare Problem Study Group, which launched its journal, Childcare Problem Study, in 1936. He also participated in the editing of the Iwanami Lecture Series, Educational Science, and the magazine, Education, and promoted an educational movement based on lifestyle and scientism. After World War II, he was appointed a member of the Education Reform Committee and was involved in educational reform. He served as president of the Japanese Association of Educational Psychology and dean of the Faculty of Education at Hokkaido University.

教育学者，教育心理学者。 1916年東京大学卒業後，知的障害児の知能構造や教育の研究にたずさわる。その後ライプチヒ大学留学中にドイツ教育科学に触発され，法政大学教授に就任 (1924) してからは，教育学を科学的に研究した。一方，保育問題研究会を組織し，36年機関紙『保育問題研究』を創刊。岩波講座『教育科学』や雑誌『教育』などの編集にも参画し，生活主義と科学主義の教育運動を推進した。第2次世界大戦後は教育刷新委員会委員などに任命され，教育改革にかかわった。日本教育心理学会会長，北海道大学教育学部長などを歴任した。
