...The southern half of the lake has good circulation of water due to the influence of the tides, but the northern half is stagnant water, and environmental problems such as lake pollution, red tides, and reduced transparency have arisen. Bentenjima in the southern part of Lake Hamana has developed as a resort and tourist destination centered on clam digging and swimming since the mid-Meiji period, but the area in the north of the lake, known as Oku Hamana, has seen tourism development centered around Kanzanji Onsen, triggered by the construction of the Mikkabi Interchange on the Tomei Expressway that runs through the northern part of the lake (1969), the Lake Hamana Lakeside Way that connects to it (opened in 1968), and the Lake Hamana Bridge that stretches from Bentenjima to the Murakushi Peninsula (opened in 1973). The entire area is Lake Hamana Prefectural Natural Park. ...
