Black Country

Japanese: ブラック･カントリー（英語表記）Black Country

The common name for an industrial region in the western Midlands region of central England. Officially, it is called the West Midlands Industrial Region. The name comes from the air pollution, crowded houses, and desolate landscape caused by the concentration of numerous coal mines, iron ore mines, and steelworks, and is translated as "Kurogo" in Japanese. The region is centered on the three major industrial cities of Birmingham, Coventry, and Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, and includes southern Staffordshire in the north and Hereford and northeastern Worcestershire in the south. Since the Industrial Revolution, it has developed as the center of heavy industry in England, centered on the steel industry, but now most of the coalfields and iron mines have been closed and are in decline, and the focus of industry has shifted to automobiles, electrical machinery, etc.

イギリス，イングランド中部のミッドランズ地方西部にある工業地域の通称。正式にはウェスト･ミッドランズ工業地域という。名称は多数の炭坑，鉄鉱山，製鉄所などの集中による大気汚染と密集家屋，荒廃した景観に由来し，日本では〈黒郷〉と訳す。ウェスト･ミッドランズ州のバーミンガム，コベントリー，ウルバーハンプトンの三大工業都市を中心に，北のスタッフォードシャー南部や南のヘリフォード･ウースター州北東部を含む。産業革命以降，鉄鋼業を核にイギリスの重工業中心として発展してきたが，現在ではほとんどの炭田，鉄山が閉鎖されて斜陽化し，工業も自動車，電気機械などに重心が移っている。
