A city in the state of Hesse in central Germany. It is located about 90 km northeast of Frankfurt am Main, overlooking the Fulda River, and is known as a religious city. It developed around a monastery built in 744 by a disciple of St. Boniface. The cathedral (1704-12) contains the tomb of St. Boniface, and together with St. Michael's Cathedral (820-822) it is a symbol of the city and attracts many pilgrims. Catholic bishops' conferences and Protestant church conferences are also held here every year. It obtained city rights in 1157. It is a city that was not damaged by war, and the old buildings remain in the city center, including the monastery, the bishop's palace (1707, now the city hall), and Adolfsecz Castle (1930-1950). Specialties include raincoats, tires, and enamelwork. Population: 56,289 (estimated 1991).
