A general term for the people who gathered around Guillaume de Champeaux, who retired to the Abbey of St. Victor (built in 1113) on the outskirts of Paris and worked to establish mystical theology, and the school that was formed there. Representative figures include Hugh and Richard. This school not only valued mysticism, but also played a part in the rise of theology in the 12th century by aiming to synthesize philosophy and theology and constructing a mystical theology that was appropriate to this. Hugh, following Aristotle, placed natural knowledge in abstraction from experience, and by doing so recognized the primacy of reason, and then showed the ascent of the spirit in the contemplation of God, directing faith to a higher level.
