A term used to refer to trade union officials who are employed and who interact with rank-and-file members on a daily basis. The name varies from union to union, and the role also differs depending on the structure of the union organization. Examples include shop stewards in the UK and committeemen in the US. When trade unions in the UK were organized as craft unions (occupational unions), members were spread across many workplaces and union work was carried out by each local organization. Workplace activities such as collecting union dues, encouraging new members to join, and monitoring working conditions were carried out by volunteers from among the rank-and-file members. These were called shop stewards (or fathers of the chapel, checkweighers, etc. in some organizations). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
