His archaeological field research, focusing on Buddhist art, spanned the Indian subcontinent, Indochina, Java, the Western Regions, China, and Japan, and the results of his research came to fruition in many publications, including Greek and Buddhist Art of Gandhara (2 volumes, 1905-51) and The Origins of Buddhist Art (1917).
