〘noun〙① (━suru) To write and record characters. Also, something that has been written down. A record. ※Shoku Nihongi - Tenpyo Hoji 8th year (764), September Jinshi "A man of intellect and wisdom, he took care of a brief note-taking session ." ※Western Affairs (1866-70) by Fukuzawa Yukichi, first "In the office where this draft was first prepared, a separate note was taken of the President's wishes." ② A role in writing down and managing official documents and meeting minutes. ※Essays and Literary Conference Notes (1782), third volume "A note-taking session has also gone to Korea." ③ One of the six heads of the Zen sect. A person in charge of producing documents for temples. ※Shobogenzo (1231-53), Gyoji: "When he arrived at the meeting of Saian Kokushi, he served as a secretary." ④ Particularly from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, a person who handled clerical duties at a brothel or wrote letters for the prostitutes. ※Takekurabe (1895-96), Higuchi Ichiyo, 3: "My mother was a seamstress for the prostitutes, and my father became a clerk at a small lattice shop ." ⑤ An employee who works under the direction of a superior to draft documents, handle general affairs, and accounting. Mainly refers to employees of courts and administrative agencies. Clerks. ※Saikoku Risshihen (1870-71), Nakamura Masanao, 9: "The poet Spencer also began as a secretary to the Imperial Commissioner of Ireland ." ⑥ A member of the secretariat of a political party, labor union, etc. ※Young People (1933-37)〈Yojiro Ishizaka〉Part 2 "I heard he's the secretary of the stevedores' union or something."

〘名〙① (━する) 文字を書きしるすこと。また、書きしるしたもの。記録。※続日本紀‐天平宝字八年(764)九月壬子「性聰敏、略渉書記」※西洋事情(1866‐70)〈福沢諭吉〉初「初め此案文を作たる局にて別に大統領の異旨を書記し」② 公文書や会議の議事などを書きしるしたり、管理したりする役。※随筆・文会雑記(1782)三「又書記一人朝鮮に行て居る也」③ 禅家の六頭首(ろくとうしゅ)の一つ。寺の文書の製作をつかさどる者。※正法眼蔵(1231‐53)行持「斎安国師の会にいたりて、書記に充するに」④ 特に、江戸末期から明治にかけて、遊女屋で事務をとったり、遊女の手紙の代筆などをしたりした者。※たけくらべ(1895‐96)〈樋口一葉〉三「母は遊女の仕立物、父は小格子の書記(ショキ)に成りぬ」⑤ 上司の指揮を受けて文案作成、庶務、会計などにあたる職員。おもに、裁判所や行政庁などの職員をいう。書記官。※西国立志編(1870‐71)〈中村正直訳〉九「詩人斯本色(スペンセル)も、始は愛蘭(アイランド)欽差大臣の書記となり」⑥ 政党や労働組合などの書記局の成員。※若い人(1933‐37)〈石坂洋次郎〉下「沖仲仕の組合の書記かなんかしてるんだって」
