Austrian ethnologist, archaeologist, and art historian. Professor at the University of Vienna. He conducted important research on Southeast Asia, Oceania, India, and the cultural relations between the Old and New continents. He conducted his research using documents and museum specimens rather than field surveys, and established classic systems in the ethnology, prehistory, and pre-Hindu art history of Southeast Asia. However, today his system of Southeast Asian prehistory is subject to criticism. Although both were Viennese ethnologists and took a cultural history stance, they differed from W. Schmidt's cultural sphere theory.

オーストリアの民族学者，考古学者，美術史家。ウィーン大学教授。東南アジアを中心として，オセアニア，インド，新旧両大陸間の文化関連などについて，重要な研究を行った。実地調査ではなく，文献や博物館標本を用いて研究を行い，東南アジアの民族学，先史学，先ヒンドゥー時代の美術史において，それぞれ古典的な体系をうち立てた。しかし今日では，その東南アジア先史学の体系は批判にさらされている。ともにウィーンの民族学者で文化史的立場に立ちながらも，W.シュミットの文化圏説とは一線を画していた。
