An industrial city in eastern Pennsylvania, USA. Population 51,551 (1980). Located on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, it was once the center of anthracite coal production. Industries include clothing, pencils, electrical parts, tires, oil refining machinery, and tobacco. Settled in 1769, it was incorporated as a city in 1871. The city's name comes from John Wilkes and Isaac Barrie, British members of the House of Commons who opposed the American colonial policy.
