Wilkes-Barre

An industrial city in eastern Pennsylvania, USA. Population 51,551 (1980). Located on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, it was once the center of anthracite coal production. Industries include clothing, pencils, electrical parts, tires, oil refining machinery, and tobacco. Settled in 1769, it was incorporated as a city in 1871. The city's name comes from John Wilkes and Isaac Barrie, British members of the House of Commons who opposed the American colonial policy. [Kanno Mineaki]

アメリカ合衆国，ペンシルベニア州東部の工業都市。人口5万1551(1980)。サスケハナ川の東岸に位置し，かつては無煙炭生産地域の中心地であった。衣服，鉛筆，電気部品，タイヤ，石油精製機械，タバコなどの工業がある。1769年に定住が行われ，1871年に市制施行。都市名は，アメリカ植民地政策に反対した，イギリスの庶民院議員ジョン･ウィルクスとアイザック･バリにちなむ。【菅野峰明】
