Life

Born in Gdańsk (Danzig) to a wealthy banker, he lived a life of carefree living. From an early age, he traveled to Europe, including England and France, which influenced his view of the world and art. He is also well known for his discord and conflict with his mother, Johanna Schopenhauer (1766-1838), a female writer, which is one of the reasons for his unique misogyny and contempt for women. After his father's death, he studied history and natural sciences at the University of Göttingen from 1809, as well as philosophy under the skeptic Gottlob Ernst Schulze (1761-1833). The ideas of Plato and Kant that he learned there, along with Indian Vedanta philosophy, became the basic framework that constituted his philosophical system. He completed his doctoral dissertation, On the Four Grounds of the Law of Sufficient Reason (1813), and On Vision and Colors, inspired by Goethe's theory of colors, but his major work was The World as Will and Representation (1819). It is no exaggeration to say that he dedicated his entire later life to this work, written in his late 20s to early 30s. However, this major work was not necessarily well received at the time, and Schopenhauer, who was confident in himself, was deeply disappointed. Nevertheless, this work led him to become a private lecturer at the University of Berlin. At that time, Hegel's popularity was at its peak at the University of Berlin, and Schopenhauer announced that he would deliberately hold a lecture at the same time as Hegel's lecture. The result was disastrous, and while Hegel's lecture was full, Schopenhauer's lecture did not take place. He gained public recognition with his later works entitled "Epilogues and Supplements" (published in Japanese translation as "On Suicide", "On Reading", "On Intelligence", etc.) in 1851, but this rise in acclaim corresponded to a certain state of stagnation in Germany following the defeat of the March Revolution in 1848. In Japan too, in the oppressive atmosphere before the war, there was a period known as "Dekansho", where Schopenhauer was read by students alongside Descartes and Kant, which cannot be considered without considering the dark reality of Japan rushing headlong into war.

Ideas and influences

According to Schopenhauer, the world is nothing but a "representation of myself" and a phenomenon. In other words, the world exists only as an object that corresponds to the will, which is a subject. In contrast to phenomena in time, space, and causality, the thing-in-itself that Kant created is in fact nothing but the will itself. It is a "blind will to live," and life is painful because it pursues unfulfilled desires. According to him, the various forms of human beings, such as the history of mankind and the changes of the times, have meaning only to the extent that they can read the idea, which is the appropriate objectivity of the will, and are insignificant in themselves. Art is capable of recognizing this idea, and music in particular excels in that it directly objectifies the will without the mediation of an idea. However, the release from the pain of life through art is only temporary. Therefore, in order to be liberated from the pain of life, what is truly required is an ethical dimension that involves the denial of the will, the promotion of selfless acts, and the attainment of the state of oneness between Brahman and Self, the state of nirvana.

生涯

グダニスク（ダンツィヒ）で富裕な銀行家のもとに生まれ、生涯生活の心配なく暮らした。幼少期からイギリス、フランスなどヨーロッパ諸国を旅行し、それが彼の世界観・芸術観にも影響している。また、女流作家である母ヨハンナJohanna Schopenhauer（1766―1838）との不和・対立は有名で、彼独特の女嫌いと女性蔑視(べっし)の考えの一因になっている。父の死後、1809年よりゲッティンゲン大学で歴史・自然科学を、ほかに懐疑主義者シュルツェGottlob Ernst Schulze（1761―1833）について哲学を学んだ。そこで学んだプラトンとカントの思想はインドのベーダーンタ哲学と並んで、彼の哲学体系を構成する基本的な枠組みとなっている。学位論文『充足理由律の四つの根拠について』（1813）や、ゲーテの色彩論に刺激された『視覚と色彩について』といった著作を完成しているが、なんといっても主著は『意志と表象としての世界』（1819）である。20代後半から30歳にかけて書かれたこの著作に彼の後生のすべては捧(ささ)げられたといって過言ではない。しかし、この主著は、当時かならずしも高い評価を得ず、自信をもっていた彼はひどく失望した。とはいっても、この著作がきっかけとなって、彼はベルリン大学の私講師となった。当時、ベルリン大学はヘーゲルの人気が頂点に達していたが、ショーペンハウアーは、わざとヘーゲルの講義と同じ時間に講義を開くという告知を出した。結果は惨めなもので、ヘーゲルの講義は満員であったが、ショーペンハウアーの講義は成立しなかった。彼が世に認められるようになったのは1851年の『余録と補遺』（邦訳書は『自殺について』『読書について』『知性について』などとして出版）と名づけられる晩年の著作によってであるが、この評価の高まりは、1848年の三月革命の敗北によるドイツでのある種の閉塞(へいそく)状況に対応するものであった。日本でも戦前の重苦しい雰囲気のなかで「デカンショ」といって、デカルト、カントと並んでショーペンハウアーが学生たちに読まれたのも、戦争に突き進む日本の暗い現実を抜きには考えられない。

思想と影響

ショーペンハウアーによれば、世界とは「わたしの表象」であり、現象にほかならない。つまり、主観である意志に対応する客観としてのみ、世界が存在する。時間・空間・因果関係においてある現象に対して、カントのたてた物自体とは実は意志そのものにほかならない。それは「生きんとする盲目的意志」であり、満たされない欲望を追求するがゆえに、生とは苦痛なのである。彼によれば、人類の歴史、時代の変転などの人間の多様な形態は、意志の適切な客体性であるイデアを読み取りうる限りで意味をもつのであって、それ自体においてはどうでもよいものである。このイデアを認識しうるのが芸術であり、なかでも音楽は、意志を直接にイデアという媒介なしに客観化するという点で卓越している。しかし、芸術による生の苦痛からの解脱(げだつ)は一時的なものでしかない。そこで生の苦痛から解脱するには、意志の否定によって無私の行為へと向かい、梵我一如(ぼんがいちにょ)の境地、涅槃(ねはん)の境地へ達するという倫理の次元こそが、真に求められるものである。
