Wilkes Land

Japanese: ウィルクス・ランド(英語表記)Wilkes Land
Wilkes Land
The part of Antarctica that faces the Indian Ocean from Cape Hordern at 100.5°E to Point Alden at 142°E. The coast runs along approximately 66.5°S latitude, and the inland reaches an elevation of 3000m. In 1838-42, American naval officer Charles Wilkes (1798-1877) explored the Pacific Ocean and Antarctica with five ships, one of which approached the coast and recognized Antarctica as a continent. Later, the place was named after the captain of the expedition.
