1841‐1910 A representative Polish positivist novelist, she was also the first professional female writer in the history of Polish literature. She actively expressed the ideas of positivism in her works, such as in "The Widow Marta" (1873), which depicts the tragedy of a woman from a good family who is forced to become independent, and in "Meir Jezofowicz" (1878), which deals with the issue of Jewish assimilation. Her most famous work is the long novel "On the Banks of the Neman" (1887), a hymn to the working man that depicts Polish society in Lithuania after the January Uprising, and the beauty of its depiction of nature is comparable to that of Mickiewicz's "Pan Tadeusz" (1834).
