Born: October 15, 1906, Ulingan Died: May 30, 1945, Ratzerburg. German economic location theorist. Studied under A. Spiethoff at the University of Bonn and W. Eucken at the University of Freiburg, and twice conducted research trips throughout North America with the Rockefeller Foundation. He first self-published a pamphlet on the economic consequences of population decline, and received high praise for his 1936 book "Bevölkerungswellen und Wechsellagen" (Demographic Changes and Economic Cycles), but it was his 1940 book "Die räumliche Ordnung der Wirtschaft" (Economic Location Theory). His contributions to location theory were his elucidation of location problems using general equilibrium theory, and his theoretical attempts to elucidate problems such as market areas and sales territories.
