Aleksei Silych Novikov-Priboi

Soviet writer. He served as a sailor from 1899 to 1906. He participated in the naval battle off Tsushima during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05, and was taken prisoner by the Japanese. He began writing while interned. After returning to Russia, he participated in the revolution in 1905, went into exile abroad in 1907, and worked as a sailor on merchant ships in various countries before returning to Russia in 1913. After the revolution, he began his career as a writer, publishing short and medium-length stories about the lives of people who worked at sea, such as The Divers (1923) and Woman of the Sea (1928). In his representative work, Tsushima (1932-40), he wove his own experiences into the story based on his research of historical documents, and described the courage of Russian sailors off Tsushima, the incompetence of the command center, and the growing anti-war sentiment among the sailors.

ソ連邦の作家。1899年から1906年まで水兵勤務。1904‐05年の日露戦争で対馬沖の海戦に参加，日本の捕虜となり，抑留中に創作をはじめる。帰国後05年革命に参加し，07年に国外に亡命，各国の商船で水夫として働き，13年に帰国した。革命後，作家生活に入り，《潜水夫たち》(1923)，《海の女》(1928)など，海に働く人たちの生活を扱った中･短編を発表した。代表作となった《ツシマ》(1932‐40)で，彼は歴史文献の研究のうえに自己の体験を織りこみ，対馬沖でのロシア水兵の勇気，司令部の無能，水兵の間に高まる反戦気分などを描いた。
