Brown-Séquard's syndrome

When one side of the spinal cord is damaged, a specific pattern of sensory abnormalities and motor paralysis occurs. The name comes from Brown-Séquard's research on hemisection of the spinal cord in animals. In this syndrome, below the level of the lesion, motor paralysis, deep sensory impairment, and some tactile impairment occur on the same side as the lesion, while on the opposite side, impairment of temperature sensation, pain sensation, and mild tactile impairment occur. Within the spinal cord, nerve fibers that transmit sensation enter the spinal cord from the dorsal root and ascend, while nerve fibers that control movement (these nerve tracts are called pyramidal tracts) descend.

脊髄の半側が障害されたとき，特有のパターンの知覚異常と運動麻痺を生ずるものをいう。病名は動物の脊髄半側切断に関するブラウン･セカールの研究にちなんでつけられた。この症候群では病変のあるレベル以下において，病変と同側では運動麻痺，深部知覚障害および一部の触覚障害が起こり，反対側では温度覚，痛覚の障害と軽い触覚障害が生ずる。脊髄内には，知覚を伝える神経繊維が脊髄後根から入って上行し，運動をつかさどる神経繊維(この神経路を錐体路という)が下行している。
