German archaeologist. He began working at the German National Archaeological Institute in Athens in 1882, while also working on the investigation of Greek classical antiquities, including assisting Schliemann in his second excavation at Troja. He served as director of the Institute of Archaeology (Athens) (1887-1912) and became a professor emeritus at the University of Jena. He lived permanently on the Greek island of Leucas, where he excavated sites such as Olympia, and died there. He is known for the discovery of the Hekadonpedon (ancient temple of Athena) in Athens and the excavation of Pergamon.
