Kavanagh, P.

…Austin Clarke (1896-1974) used the musicality of Gaelic to express himself in English, publishing the legendary poem The Running of the Connacht Cattle (1921) and Night and Morning (1938), which confesses his religious conflict. After devoting himself to theater for a while, he transformed into a modern poet in his later years with his collections of poems Ancient Light (1955) and A Flight to Africa (1963), in which he discusses events around him in a tense style. Patrick Kavanagh (1904-67) criticized the idealism of the Renaissance movement, and vividly described the reality of miserable rural life based on his own experiences in his collection of poems The Peasant (1936) and the long poem The Great Famine (1942). In Lough Derg (1946), Denis Devlin (1908-59) expressed religious fervor through the techniques of modernist literature.
