Carvalho

Japanese: カルバリョ
Carvalho
1560‐1631
A Portuguese Jesuit from Lisbon. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1576. He came to Japan in 1598 (Keicho 3), but returned to Macau, where he served as the director of the Collegio from 1601 to 1609. He returned to Japan in 1611 as the Provincial Superior of the Society of Jesus in Japan, a position he held until 1617 (Genna 3). During his term, he dealt with difficult problems both inside and outside the Church, such as the worsening Church finances and conflicts with other religious orders, in a Japanese society where the ban on Christianity was being strengthened. During the Great Expulsion in 1614, he retreated to Macau. In 1615, he dispatched the Portuguese Diogo Carvalho to the Japanese town of Faifo in Cochinchina, and the Italian Francesco Buzomi to Toulon, laying the foundation for the Jesuits' missionary work in Cochinchina.
