〘Noun〙 (Formerly "mandarake")① (A transliteration of mandārava. Also translated as Tenmyo-ka, Tekii-ka, Etsui-ka, Shiraka, etc.) A Buddhist term. A fragrant white flower that blooms in the heavens. Its color is exquisite, and it is said to bring joy to the hearts of those who see it. It falls from the heavens as an expression of ecstasy when the Buddha preaches or when other Buddhas appear. It corresponds to the white lotus, one of the four flowers. *From Jōgyo Wasan (995-1335): "Furthermore, in the land of that Buddha, delicate mandaraka flowers always fall at six o'clock in the day and at night, bringing about heavenly joy." 〘名〙 (古くは「まんだらけ」)① (māndārava の音訳。天妙華・適意華・悦意華・白華などと訳す) 仏語。天上に咲くという芳香を放つ白い花。その色は美妙で、見る人の心に悦楽を感じさせるという。仏の説法または諸仏出現の際に法悦の表示として天から降る。四華の一つ、白蓮華にあたる。※浄業和讚(995‐1335)中「またかのほとけの国土には つねに天の楽をなす 昼夜六時に微妙の 曼陀羅華ふりくだる」 〔法華経‐序品〕② (①に擬していう) 蓮(はす)の花。③ 植物「ちょうせんあさがお(朝鮮朝顔)」の異名。〔和漢三才図会(1712)〕④ 植物「むらさきけまん(紫華鬘)」の異名。
