Edo Yagyu School

…The founder of the school can be said to be Yagyu Sekishusai Muneyoshi (1527-1606), who received a certificate from Kamiizumi Ise no Kami Hidetsuna (Kamiizumi Hidetsuna), the founder of the Shinkage-ryu school. Muneyoshi's fifth son, Tajima no Kami Munenori (Yagyu Munenori), became the founder of the Edo Yagyu school as the military arts instructor for the Tokugawa Shogun, and Muneyoshi's eldest son Yoshikatsu's second son, Hyōgo no Suke Toshiyoshi (1579-1650), served the Tokugawa family in Owari and became the founder of the Owari Yagyu school. The two schools continued into modern times, and while the Edo Yagyu school has died out as a swordsmanship school, the Owari Yagyu school has handed down the techniques of the Yagyu Shinkage-ryu school to the current head of the family. …

…新陰流の祖上泉伊勢守秀綱(上泉秀綱)から印可をうけた柳生石舟斎宗厳（むねよし）(1527‐1606)が流祖といえる。宗厳の五男但馬守宗矩（むねのり）(柳生宗矩)が徳川将軍の兵法師範として江戸柳生流の祖となり，宗厳の長男厳勝（よしかつ）の次男兵庫助利厳（としよし）(1579‐1650)が尾張の徳川家に仕えて尾張柳生流の祖となった。二つの流系は近代まで続き，江戸柳生の方は剣術流儀としては絶えたが，尾張柳生は現当主に至るまで，柳生新陰流の技法を伝承している。…
