King of England (reigned 1689-1702). Also known as William of Orange. Son of Stadtholder William II of the Netherlands and Mary, daughter of King Charles I of England. As Stadtholder of the Netherlands (1672-1702), he resisted the invasions of Louis XIV and concluded the Peace of Nijmegen. In 1688, he was invited by opponents of King James II of England to send troops, which led to the Glorious Revolution, which was successful, and he accepted the Declaration of Rights. He ascended to the throne with his wife Mary (Mary II, daughter of James II), paving the way for a constitutional government centered on parliament. During the War of the Spanish Succession, he formed the anti-French coalition and fought against Louis XIV throughout his life.
