Onahama

Japanese: 小名浜 - おなはま
Onahama
A port town facing the Pacific Ocean in the southeast of Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture. Formerly part of Iwasaki County, Mutsu Province. During the Edo Period, it was bustling as the leading fishing port in the Iwaki region, a transit commercial port for the import and export of rice tax and various other goods, and a port of call on the Tokaikai shipping route. In 1747, when the Iwakidaira domain, including this area, with a 47,000 koku stipend, was transferred to the Shogunate, the Shogunate magistrate's camp was established there, and it also became a political base. The village details book from the same year lists 1,361 households and 6,237 people. From the early Meiji Period, it became a shipping port for coal produced in the Joban coalfields. However, with the opening of the Japanese Railway Iwaki Line (now the JR Joban Line) in 1897, the shipping industry declined. After that, it functioned as a fishing port again, but in 1951 it was designated an important port, and now it also plays a role as an international trade port and a port for importing foreign timber.
