One of the four hereditary princely families. The first was Prince Yoshihito, son of Emperor Goyozei, who founded the Takamatsunomiya family in 1625 (Kan'ei 2). The second was Prince Nagahito, son of Emperor Gomizunoo, who was called Hanamachinomiya and Momozononomiya, but later succeeded to the throne (Emperor Gosai). After a 14-year hiatus, Prince Yukihito, son of Emperor Gosai, succeeded to the throne as the third princely family in 1667 (Kanbun 7), and renamed himself Arisugawa. After the early death of the fourth prince, Prince Tadahito, Prince Yorihito, son of Emperor Reigen, succeeded him as the fifth prince, and since then, the following princes have succeeded him: Prince Orihito, Prince Tsunahito, Prince Takahito, Prince Taruhito, and Prince Takehito. As the tenth prince, Prince Takehito, died young, Prince Nobuhito, third son of Emperor Taisho, took over the role of performing the rites under the title of Takamatsunomiya. Although waka and calligraphy were considered his family studies, Prince Taruhito became involved in politics and the military after the end of the Edo period.
