Kansei Rebellion

...The last armed struggle of the Ainu people against the Matsumae clan in the early modern period. In the early modern period, it was called the "Kansei Emishi Rebellion," "Kunashiri Disturbance," or "Emishi Disturbance in Year 1 of the Kansei Era," but in modern times, it is also called the "Emishi Disturbance in Year 1 of the Kansei Era," "Kansei Rebellion," "Kunashiri-Menashi Rebellion," or "Kunashiri-Menashi Region Ainu Uprising." After the defeat in the Battle of Shakushain, the Matsumae clan's control over the Ainu people was further strengthened, and especially after the establishment of the basho-contract system during the Genroku and Kyoho periods (1688-1736), the Ainu people were transformed from trading partners into laborers in the fishing grounds.
