Born in the 2nd year of the Chokan Era. Son of Ashikaga Toshitsuna. In the 4th year of the Jisho Era, he joined the Taira clan and fought in the army to pursue Emperor Mochihito, but his reward was taken away due to a clan conflict. In the 2nd year of the Juei Era, he fought against Oyama Tomomasa, who was on the side of Minamoto no Yoritomo, but was defeated and fled to the west. Born in Shimotsuke (Tochigi Prefecture).
