These stories are based on experiences in martial arts, and were primarily performed by the Otogishu (Otogi-shu) who served feudal lords during the Sengoku period. They were extremely popular as stories to tell on the battlefield, but were especially popular as night watchmen on the battlefield. Military commanders learned about developments in various provinces through martial arts stories, and they also helped unify the thinking of their soldiers. During the Sengoku period, they were often performed at night to keep them awake, but gradually they began to be performed during the day as well. Works such as "Night Stories About Things" and "Memorandum of Stories" are records of martial arts stories. [Sekiyama Kazuo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
