A city in southwestern Mali, West Africa. It is located on the midstream coast of the Senegal River and has a river port. It is also called Kaes. It has a population of 84,800 (estimated 2002). It is the commercial center of southwestern Mali and prospered as a distribution center for gum arabic, groundnuts, and cotton, and is also home to industries such as leather, spinning, and food processing. It was the administrative center of Mali until 1908. It is a key location on the railway linking the capital Bamako and Dakar in Senegal, and also has an airport.
