Kayes - Kayes (English spelling)

A city in southwestern Mali, West Africa. It is located on the midstream coast of the Senegal River and has a river port. It is also called Kaes. It has a population of 84,800 (estimated 2002). It is the commercial center of southwestern Mali and prospered as a distribution center for gum arabic, groundnuts, and cotton, and is also home to industries such as leather, spinning, and food processing. It was the administrative center of Mali until 1908. It is a key location on the railway linking the capital Bamako and Dakar in Senegal, and also has an airport.

西アフリカ、マリ南西部の都市。セネガル川中流沿岸に位置し河港がある。カエスともいう。人口8万4800（2002推計）。マリ南西部の商業中心地で、アラビアゴム、ラッカセイ、綿花の集散地として栄え、皮革、紡績、食品加工などの工業も立地する。1908年までマリ行政の中心地であった。首都バマコとセネガルのダカールを結ぶ鉄道の要地で、空港もある。
