The movimiento muralismo (El Movimiento Muralismo) was an art movement that arose in Mexico, centered around artists such as Siqueiros, Rivera, and Orozco, who sought to create art suited to the new era following the Mexican Revolution (1911), depict the significance of the revolution in murals, and spread the message of the revolution to the masses far and wide. The idea of creating a mural to commemorate the Mexican Revolution had been around since the 1910s, but it wasn't realized until 1922, when the then Minister of Education, J. Vasconcelos, provided a wall for the National High School. Siqueiros, who returned to Mexico in 1922 and founded the Revolutionary Professional Painters, Sculptors, and Printmakers Union (1923), was the man who played a leading role in organizing the mural movement and its artists. Rivera played a leading role in the production process. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
