Japanese: 緑藻類 - りょくそうるい（英語表記）Chlorophyta; green algae

A general term for algae whose plastids contain a large amount of chlorophyll and are green in appearance. The recent trend is to exclude the Heterokontophytes (which are placed in the Xanthophyceae) from the Chlorophyte class and include the Charophytes, Breambes, Zygophytes, Heterokontophytes, Prasinophytes, and Euchlorophytes. The Euchlorophytes include the Volcaneales, Coprinusales, Chlorococcales, Euchlorophytes, Ulvales, and Bultramediales.

色素体が多量の葉緑素を有し，緑色を呈する藻類を一括してこのように呼んだもの。最近の傾向としては緑藻植物には不等毛類を除外し (これは黄緑色藻類に入れる) ，車軸藻類，ハネモ類，接合藻類，サヤミドロ類，プラシノ藻類および真正緑藻類を入れている。真正緑藻類にはオオヒゲマワリ目，ヨツメモ目，クロロコックム目，ヒビミドロ目，アオサ目，タマモ目などが包含されている。
