When a physical quantity is used as a medium to transmit a signal, a device that has the function of changing the medium into another physical quantity without changing the quality of the signal is called a transducer. For example, a microphone is a transducer that converts a signal transmitted by sound waves into an electrical signal, and changes the signal medium of air pressure into the medium of voltage. A speaker is also a transducer that converts an electrical signal into a sound signal, but its purpose differs from that of a microphone in that it outputs a modified version of the signal that was once captured.

ある物理量が信号を伝える媒体として使われているとき，信号の質を変えずに媒体を別の物理量に変える機能をもつ器具をトランスジューサーという。例えばマイクロホンは音波が伝える信号を電気信号に変換するトランスジューサーで，空気圧という信号の媒体を電圧という媒体に変えるものである。また，スピーカーは電気信号を音の信号に変換するトランスジューサーであるが，一度取り込まれた信号に手を加えたものを出力するという点でマイクロホンとは使用目的が異なっている。
