Italian composer, pianist, conductor, and critic. Also known as Casella. Born in Turin, he studied under Fauré and others at the Paris Conservatoire, where he was influenced by them. In Paris, he became acquainted with Debussy and M. Ravel, and made his debut as a composer and conductor in 1908, conducting one of his own compositions. His style, heavily influenced by Mahler, eventually shifted to an avant-garde direction using polytonality. He returned home in 1915 due to World War I, and in 1917 he founded the Société Nationale de Musica. Aiming to establish modern Italian music, he led the Italian music scene in the first half of the 20th century together with Malipiero, Pizzetti, and Respighi. From then on, he relied on the traditions of Italian music and opened up his own neoclassical realm. His representative works include "Night of May" for voice and orchestra (1913), the ballet music "The Vase" based on Pirandello's original work (1924), and "Violin Concerto in A minor" (1928). He has also written many books as a musicologist. →Castelnuovo Tedesco Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
