British archaeologist. Born in Glasgow, he studied classics at the University of London, after which he served as director of the National Museum Wales before moving to the Museum of London, where he developed it into a typical regional museum. In order to realize his ideals for archaeological research and education in Britain, he also worked hard to establish the Institute of Archaeology, University of London, in 1937, becoming its first director. During this time, he worked to improve excavation methods with the aim of "excavating humans," and established the Wheeler method, also known as the "grid system," at Maeden Qasr.

イギリスの考古学者。グラスゴーに生まれ，ロンドン大学で古典学を学んだのち，国立ウェールズ博物館長からロンドン博物館に移って，ここを典型的な地域博物館として整備し，またイギリスにおける考古学の研究と教育に対する彼の理想を実現するため，1937年ロンドン大学考古学研究所の設立に尽力して初代所長となった。この間，問題意識をもって〈人間を発掘する〉ことを目指して発掘方法の改良に努め，メードゥン･カスルにおいて〈グリッド･システム〉とも呼ばれるウィーラー法を確立した。
