1890‐1976 British archaeologist. Born in Glasgow, he studied classics at the University of London, after which he served as director of the National Museum Wales before moving to the Museum of London, where he developed it into a typical regional museum. In order to realize his ideals for archaeological research and education in Britain, he also worked hard to establish the Institute of Archaeology, University of London, in 1937, becoming its first director. During this time, he worked to improve excavation methods with the aim of "excavating humans," and established the Wheeler method, also known as the "grid system," at Maeden Qasr.
