Born: August 12, 1762 in Langensalza
Died: August 25, 1836. A German physician in Berlin. He was the most famous physician of his time. He was the author of the original work "Enchiridion Medicum" (36), which was translated by Ogata Koan in 1857-61. His diagnostics was introduced to Japan in the 30-volume translations of "Fushi Kenkyou Ikun" (Enchiridion Medicum). Around the same time, Aoki Shusuke translated "Sokubyo Kamekan" (The Book of Sickness) and Yamamoto Mito translated "Fushi Shindan" (Fushi Diagnosis). He studied medicine at the universities of Jena and Göttingen, and opened a practice under his father, who was the personal physician to the Duchess of Weimar. His patients included Goethe and J. Schiller, and his lectures at the "Goethe Family Society" were well received. In 1793, he became a professor at the University of Jena. In 1801, he was appointed to Berlin as the Prussian court physician and director of the Charité Hospital. He made an effort to establish the University of Berlin in 1810, and was the first professor of internal medicine. He also worked to popularize vaccination. On July 24, 1933, the Hufeland Charitable Foundation was established with memorial contributions from doctors all over Prussia.

ドイツの医師。当時の最も有名な内科医であった。緒方洪庵が安政4 (1857) ~文久1 (61) 年に訳した『扶氏経験遺訓』 30巻の原著"Enchiridion Medicum" (36) の著者。また同じ頃,青木周弼の訳した『察病亀鑑』,山本美致が訳した『扶氏診断』は,彼の診断学を日本に紹介したものである。イェナ,ゲッティンゲン両大学で医学を学び,ワイマール公夫人の侍医であった父のもとで開業。ゲーテ,J.シラーらを患者にもち,「ゲーテ家の会」の講演が好評で,1793年にイェナ大学教授。 1801年プロイセン宮廷医兼シャリテー病院長としてベルリンへ赴任。 10年のベルリン大学創立に努力し,初代内科学教授。種痘の普及にも努めた。 33年7月 24日全プロイセン医師の記念寄金によってフーフェラント慈善財団が設立された。
