A scale that indicates the strength of earthquake motion at a certain location. Seismic intensity scale. The Japan Meteorological Agency's seismic intensity scale was previously divided into eight scales: 0 (unnoticeable), 1 (slight), 2 (light), 3 (weak), 4 (moderate), 5 (strong), 6 (violent), and 7 (severe). Since 1996, seismic intensity levels of 5 and 6 have been divided into weak and strong, respectively, to create a 10-scale scale. In the past, seismic intensity was estimated based on how it felt on the human body and the surrounding conditions, but since then, seismic intensity meters have been used to automatically observe and report the magnitude. →Magnitude
