...It appears that in the Genroku period (1688-1704) Joruri piece Yoshitsune Tsui Zenjomai by Uji Kaga no Jō, tezuma puppets were used on a go board, but the origins of this are unclear. In the same Genroku period in Edo, Koyama Jirozaburo was skilled at go board puppets, and according to the Matsudaira Yamatonokami Diary, he performed go board puppets and called them joruri go board puppets. This was incorporated into Kabuki, where child actors performed dances on the go board, and it also became a parlor art. ...
