The liturgical music of the Coptic Church, a sect of Christianity, is well known. In addition, music and dance associated with traditional religions are performed among various ethnic groups. In the north, the influence of Arabic music is strong, while in the west, Sudanese-style black music is popular. The scale is overwhelmingly pentatonic, and there are many different rhythms. In ensemble forms, the drums show intense movements. There are many repetitive forms and heroic hymns. Representative instruments include the one-stringed bowed instrument massangko, the double-sided drum cavalo, the vertical flute, and the sanza.
