Italian String Quartet (English: Quartetto Italiano)

This string quartet was formed in Reggio, Northern Italy in 1945. When it was first established it was called the New Italian String Quartet, but in 1951 it changed to its current name. It attracted attention early on for its beautiful tone, clear ensemble sound, and excellent sense of form, and gained worldwide fame after a successful concert tour of the United States in 1951. It visited Japan for the first time in 1973 (Showa 48).

1945年に北イタリアのレッジョで結成された弦楽四重奏団。設立当初は新イタリア弦楽四重奏団と称していたが、51年に現在の名称になった。美しい音色、透明なアンサンブルの響き、優れた造型感覚によって早くから注目され、51年アメリカ演奏旅行の成功によって世界的な名声を獲得した。73年（昭和48）初めて日本を訪れた。
