Hoover Dam

A gravity arch dam completed in 1935 in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River on the border between Arizona and Nevada in the southwestern United States. It was called Boulder Dam until it was renamed Hoover Dam in 1947 in honor of President H. Hoover. Its height is 221m, crest length is 379m, and dam volume is 3.36 million m3. The reservoir, Lake Mead, has a total storage capacity of 36.7 billion m3, and the power plant directly below the dam generates a maximum output of 1.35 million kW, which is used for various purposes such as irrigation of the Yuma Plains and urban water supply for the city of Los Angeles.
