Dicotyledonous, polypetalous. Deciduous shrub. Leaves are simple and serrated. Many flowers grow in slender racemes. Flowers are bisexual or solitary. Tetrameric, actinosymmetric, with 4 sepals, 4 petals, 8 stamens, 1 pistil, and a 4-locular ovary with many ovules. Fruit is berry-like with a hard skin. Distributed from the Himalayas to Japan, it consists only of the genus Cornus, of which about 6 species are known. The relatives of this family are not well understood. It is considered to be close to the family Cornaceae.

It is also classified as a member of the Cornaceae family in the APG classification. In the APG classification, it is considered to be close to the Crossosomataceae family, which is distributed in the Americas.

双子葉植物、離弁花類。落葉低木。葉は単葉で鋸歯(きょし)がある。細長い総状花序に多くの花をつける。花は両性または単生。4数性で放射相称、萼片(がくへん)4枚、花弁4枚、雄しべ8本、雌しべ1本、子房は4室で多くの胚珠(はいしゅ)がある。果実は果皮の堅い液果状。ヒマラヤから日本に分布し、6種ほど知られるキブシ属のみからなる。この科の類縁はよくわかっていない。イイギリ科に近いものとされている。
