Dicotyledonous, polypetalous. Deciduous shrub. Leaves are simple and serrated. Many flowers grow in slender racemes. Flowers are bisexual or solitary. Tetrameric, actinosymmetric, with 4 sepals, 4 petals, 8 stamens, 1 pistil, and a 4-locular ovary with many ovules. Fruit is berry-like with a hard skin. Distributed from the Himalayas to Japan, it consists only of the genus Cornus, of which about 6 species are known. The relatives of this family are not well understood.
