Okada Hanko

A Southern style painter of the late Edo period. Born in Osaka as the son of Okada Beisanjin. Given name Suku, pen name Shiu, commonly known as Uzaemon, later changed to Hikobei. Han'e was called Shobei in his childhood, and like his father, he served the Todo clan, but when he was demoted and transferred to a residence in Kyoto, he retired from service (1822) and lived in Tenma, Osaka, devoting himself to painting. He had frequent friendships with literati and artists such as Shinozaki Shochiku and Rai Sanyo, and was a representative Southern style painter of Osaka at the time. In his later years, he retreated to Sumiyoshi to avoid the hardships of the Tenpo famine, where he produced such vibrant works with meticulous brushwork as his representative works "Crows Rising in the Spring Mist" and "True View of Suminoe."

江戸後期の南画家。岡田米山人(べいさんじん)の子として大坂に生まれる。名を粛、字(あざな)を子羽(しう)、通称を宇左衛門、のち彦兵衛と改める。半江はその号で、幼いころは小米(しょうべい)といった。父と同じく藤堂(とうどう)藩に仕えたが、左遷されて京邸(きょうやしき)に移されたのを機に致仕(ちし)（1822）し、大坂・天満(てんま)に住んで画業に専念。篠崎小竹(しのざきしょうちく)、頼山陽(らいさんよう)らの文人墨客たちと交遊往来、当時の大坂の代表的南画家であった。晩年には天保飢饉(てんぽうききん)の難を避けて住吉(すみよし)に隠棲(いんせい)、そこで、代表作『春靄起鴉図(しゅんあいきあず)』『住之江真景図』などの緻密(ちみつ)な筆致による潤いのある作品を生み出した。
